Wild Women
Celebration Dance

This series began in March of 2009 as a way to celebrate my five years of textile arts study. My goal was to use a wide variety of the concepts that I had worked with in a creative and unusual textile art piece. Most of my studies were with Dale Rollerson of the Thread Studio in Perth, Australia. I have also read many of the books by Valerie Campbell-Harding and Maggie Grey. In addition, I had the opportunity to take a workshop with Jan Beany and Jean Littlejohn.

Celebration Dance has 12 components, with 24 little art quiltlets. There is one set for each month of the year. The dichotomy of a textile artist is illustrated with one side showing a spirit doll that represents our ability to be calm and thoughtful about the meaning hidden in our work, while the other side illustrates the wild side of our nature as we think outside the quilt block and try anything new and unusual.

The ladies are dancing on cobble stone circle of machine quilted silk over cotton batting and background.

JANUARY LADIES
Theme: Winter Ice
Technique:
White and silver Kunin felt was used as a base for the frosty January theme. White Misty Fuse was ironed on top. Assorted white and silver yarn snippets were lightly scattered on top. A white chiffon scarf was fused over it all. Free-motion quilting was done using Superior silver thread. Sulky Sliver opalescent and silver threads were also used. This was used as the base for the spirit doll and the body of the Wild Woman. The background for the Wild Woman was hand painted fabric that was stamped with glue and then foiled with silver. The two pieces were stitched together and traditionally bound with silver lamé fabric. The spirit doll was beaded on to a cut out Timtex base with the final row of beads securing her to her background.

A few silk snippets and some Angelina fibres were scattered over top and needled into the base before wash out the stabilizer. The background for the spirit doll was left as is, but the wild woman was heavily accented with hand stitch and tiny beads. The spirit doll was beaded on a cut out and transfer dyed Timtex base with the final row of beads securing her to her background.

MARCH LADIES
Theme: Luck of the Irish
Technique: The St. Patrick’s Day theme for March began with scrunched and paper bag painted with Emerald Lumiere with hints of gold and blue. It was then sprayed with Malachite and Emerald Moonshadow Mists. Once fused to a Peltex base, it became the background for the green wild woman.
The wild woman body and the background for the spirit doll started as a piece of green panne velvet. This was topped with a painted nappy liner and painted Wonder Under. Hints of foil were added with few touches of Emerald Halo Gold Lumiere on top. More painted Wonder Under was added on top and a green chiffon scarf was fused on top. A variety of threads with free-motion and programmed machine quilting adds depth and form. The final touch was embossing with some stamping on top and heating it with a heat gun. It was finished with silk binding.

Silk pieces, yarn snippets, and a pale yellow chiffon scarf needled on top added more texture to the spirit doll background and the body of the wild woman. Some hand stitch and beading were added. One face was made with a wash away paper mold and the other with polymer clay.
Lutradur was transfer painted with 3 different yellow dyes for the wild woman background. To tone down the acid tone, Pebeo Setacolor in pearl was painted on top. It was bound with a silk binding.

The puff paint was rubbed with Treasure Gold in Onyxite and Emerald to darken it. This was fused to a felt base and quilted with Sulky blendable 30 wt. cotton thread.
The wild woman background is a silk fusion piece recycled form an earlier, less successful project. It was over-stitched heavily with programmed stitches using rayon thread. Some hand stitching and beading that resembles vines and roots were added. It is bound in brown silk.

A second slightly darker coat was washed over top.
The second background was coloured with transfer dye stamped images on polyester quilt batting fused to a Peltex base. A layer of painted fusible web was added and covered with a mauve chiffon scarf before fusing.

One face material is children’s modeling material and the other is polymer clayThe wild woman background is hand painted recycled tissue silk fused to a Peltex base. Envelope Tyvek was painted and stamped with acrylic paints. This was stitched over top of the silk panel with a fine stipple with gold metallic thread. Sorbello stitch was worked extensively over it all with various weights and types of threads including silk, cotton, and metallic.
The sparkly base was made with a felt and painted tissue paper. It was painted in various shades of blue acrylic. Embossing powders, Tinsel and Stardust, were scattered into the wet paint and once it was dry, heated with the heat gun.

OCTOBER LADIES
Theme: Autumn Colours
Technique: Autumn was the theme for October with its rich colours and textures. The wild woman fabric and the spirit doll background were created from a simple piece of muslin that was stitched extensively with assorted threads and then painted with acrylics in a base colour. Xpandaprint was spread over top and into all crevices in the stitching and then heated to expand the texture. This was over-painted with many colours and layers of paint. The last layer of paint was sprinkled with bronze UTEE which was then heated with the heat gun. Metallic acrylic wax was burnished over the ridges. To create more contrast, the wild woman was painted with Opal Dust which added the lovely sparkle.
The second background was made with the embellisher machine using cheesecloth and assorted wool fibres. This was overstitched with a double thread technique using a copper rayon and a variegated rayon thread.
Both faces are polymer clay.
The spirit doll was beaded on to a cut out and transfer dyed Timtex base with the final row of beads securing her to her background.

One background is fabric paper made from recycled teabags and cheesecloth fused to a woven interfacing to add stability. This was painted and then sprayed with sepia and burnt umber Moonshadow Mists.
The wild woman and the matching background were created with an unusual tonal panne velvet. This was slashed and cut with a hot blade and mounted on a Peltex base. Some machine stitching was on top. The wild woman was first machine stitched to the paper base and then a hand- crocheted chain was hand couched on top of the edges.
One pace is polymer clay and the other a pewter charm.

DECEMBER LADIES
Theme: Christmas
Technique: December brings Christmas to our family and it is a special time. The unusual background for the spirit doll used a fusible fleece base with torn bits of hand made flax paper and pieces of cotton fabric and cheesecloth. Layers of Gesso, salt, molding paste, and then acrylic paints were added to create the texture. This is a technique described in Textile Translations by Maggie Grey. Moonshadow Mists and Glitz Spritz were added at the end.
The background for the wild woman has a base of Quilter’s Dream Poly batting that was transfer dyed green. Misty Fuse and green foil were fused on top. A gold tone crinkled organza was stitched on top with a couched gold Wonderfil Dazzle cord and Wonderfil holographic thread.
Hand braided cord was hand couched around the edge of the woman.
Silk binding finished the edges of the panels.
