Picture This Instructions
Photographic Transfer Method
You will need -
- Laserjet colour copies, from a print shop, (not bubblejet or inkjet prints from a home computer).
- Photocopies must be a mirror image (reversed) and it is best to work with A4 A 5 cm sponge applicator.
- Newspaper to catch extra medium.
- Pre-washed white cotton, 5 cm larger all around than the colour copy to be transferred. This must be ironed onto freezer paper (a silicon-sided paper used to prevent condensation).
- An 'old' abrasive style sponge.
- Container of water nearby to clean brush.
Now -
- Squeeze out the (Picture This) acrylic medium onto the colour copy, being careful to apply it close to the edge and in the middle.
- Thinly spread it evenly over the whole surface and edge of paper.
- Carefully place it face down onto the cotton surface and gently ease out any air bubbles with the back of your hand.
- Place this 'sandwich' in a warm dry place for 48 hours. Please note that as it dries, the surfaces will crinkle up.
- Remove the freezer paper (it can be used again).
- Soak in tepid water for 10 minutes and begin gently rubbing the white paper backing off. Let dry.
- You will note that most of the paper is removed first time but there is still a film of paper over the whole surface. Do not soak again but rub off the remaining paper with a slightly damp cloth.
Tips to Remember
- You must not iron this surface.
- Let the transferred cloth dry thoroughly before stitching.
- It is washable but do not dry in a tumble dryer.
- It will not fade. Fabrics next to it can fade with exposure to light, but transferred images will not.
- Do not place a stitched textile piece with photo transfer using this acrylic medium near a heat source (in the sun, or by a heater).
