A Sketch in Time

Number 12 of the series.

From the authors -
Sketchbooks are an essential tool for most textile artists and they are as varied as the individuals who use them.

There is no right or wrong way to use a sketchbook and the most useful are those that are an honest reflection of the thoughts, observations and ideas of the maker.

They are sometimes referred to as visual diaries or notebooks and that may sound less alarming to the person embarking on keeping one for the first time. There is a tendency for those starting a first sketchbook to be almost too reverential and to expect every page to be immaculate which is why we have deliberately included strategies for working in spontaneous ways and for building up confidence. Everyone can find methods of working that suit their style and subject matter.

They are essentially personal and private and need never be seen by anyone else, a unique story of a visual journey and a catalyst for new ideas.

It is undoubtedly true that however good the photograph might be, a sketch (even if brief and casual) with notes on context and colour will tell you more about the experience and atmosphere of a place. By attempting to draw you will have been required to look more closely. Drawing is the most effective way of improving observational skills. Sometimes working from edge to edge of the page rather than in isolated shapes can encourage a more expansive approach. To many, keeping sketchbooks is pure pleasure and an opportunity for total immersion in a time and space.

We are firmly convinced of the value of sketchbooks and have kept them for many years. Frequently our sketchbooks are diaries of travels, as well as being a source of inspiration, they are the most immediate reminders of the essence of a place.

In this booklet we explore different formats and papers as well as a variety of methods and media. Our aims are both to encourage those lacking in confidence and, for the more experienced, to find challenging and innovative ways of extending their vocabulary.
