From the back cover
A sketchbook is an invaluable companion for the embroiderer and textile artist. Packed with inspiring glimpses into the sketchbooks of some of the world's leading textile artists, this book helps you make the most of your sketchbook practice, enabling you to develop ideas, record personal observations, experiment with materials and create sketchbooks that are works of art in themselves. From the inside flap
Embroiderers and textile artists use sketchbooks in many different ways: as a means of building confidence in drawing and observation skills, a journal for recording personal thoughts and impressions, a chronicle of work in progress or a place to store precious fabric and thread samples. But they also gp beyond the traditional parameters of the sketchbook to create beautifully embellished versions that become works of art in themselves. Today, the sketchbook forms an essential part of any textile course. This unique book contains fascinating insights into the sketchbook methods of many of the world's leading textile artists, including Julia Caprara, Audrey Walker, Rozanne Hawksley, Amanda Clayton, Sian Martin and Ruth Issett, and is illustrated throughout with both sketchbook material and finished pieces.
Many different approaches to sketchbooks are discussed, including drawing and observation; sketching on location, both outdoors and in museums or galleries; working with fabric and thread samples; sketchbook approaches to conceptual pieces; and using collage. The author also goes beyond the pages of the traditional sketchbook to discuss models and maquettes as a sketch process, and 'E-sketchbooks', created and stored on computers.
The book also contains practical advice on choosing a sketchbook, equipment, mark-making and page-colouring techniques, and instructions for making your own simple sketchbooks.
Packed with inspiring ideas and approaches, this book provides all the information you need to make the most of your sketchbook.
